There are times when note-taking services may not be a reasonable accommodation based on the course format or environment. In most cases, notes are not necessary for lower-level discussion-based ENGL, PYED, FYS, nor lab courses. Within the first week of classes or your Welcome Meeting with SDS, confirm the courses you require a note taker. SDS will only be responsible for providing notes from the date the request is received. Students are encouraged to submit their requests as early in the semester as possible. Once you’ve met with your coordinator and have note taking as an approved accommodation, you will be able to enter your course accommodations each semester. The note taker coordinator is always available for consultation should questions, problems, or concerns arise during any stage of this process. It is important to note that note taking support is in no way intended to lessen the student’s academic responsibilities and is not a means of absolving students from unexcused absences from class. Instructors will be contacted to verify that notes are not already provided through other sources (i.e., professor’s own notes), If note taking support is needed, submit a request for note taking accommodations. Students must first be registered with Student Disability Services and approved for note taking accommodations before making arrangements for a note taker. Students eligible for note taking assistance Procedure for Students Receiving Note Taking Assistance Students must attend class to receive notes using this accommodation. Requests are assessed on a class-by-class basis, a review of course modality, how the student’s disability affects their ability to capture the lecture material, how notes support the course learning objectives and course materials provided by the instructor. SDS note taking assistance is an accommodation that provides access to course lectures for students whose documented disability affects their ability to take notes. Depending on the nature and functional limitations of a student’s documented disability, the student may be eligible for note taking assistance. Student Disability Services (SDS)reviews requests for accommodations on an individualized, interactive, case-by-case basis.
